Visits and activities in the Pyrenees Orientales

Near the Camping des Randonneurs, you will find several marked hiking trails as well as mountain biking and via ferrata trails.
You can also discover the region on horseback, on a picturesque little train (the "Train Rouge"), on a motorbike, along the Agly gorges, or simply from the air in a microlight.

Visits to Cathar castles (Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, Puilaurens, Rennes-le-Château, the mediaeval city of Carcassonne etc.), Tautavel with its prehistoric museum, and its prehistoric caves.

Swimming and discovering the Gorges de Galamus, the Gorges de St Jaume or the Aude.

Puilaurens Castle

The castle of Puilaurens stands on a rock about 700m above the sea level, overlooking the Lapradelle village in the heart of a fir trees forest
The castle has two different architectural parts: the keep and the "Tour de la Dame”.

Peyrepertuse Castle

Due to the extent of its remains and the quality of its construction, the castle of Peyrepertuse (XI century) is the best example of medieval architecture in the Languedoc (most of the walls are still standing, and some rooms are still well preserved).

It is located on a ridge and offers amazing views of the hills and vineyards.
Every year, the most important medieval festival in the south of France takes place and the whole family will enjoy many entertainement.

Tautavel museum

Over 1500 m2 exhibition galleries... through 22 rooms, the prehistory Museum invites you to meet the Tautavel Man, the oldest man found in France (-450,000 years).
Life-size reconstructions allow visitors to feel like they are in this ancestral habitat.

Galamus Gorges

The Gorges de Galamus that extend over two km are located in St Paul de Fenouillet, between the Aude and the Pyrénées-Orientales departments.
An exceptional natural site for canyoning and rafting.

Rennes-le-Château

Rennes-le-Château is a lovely perched village overlooking the Aude valley. It is well known for the legend of its priest Bérenger Saunière and his mysterious treasure.

Gouleyrous Gorges in Tautavel

Tha Gouleyrous gorges located to the north of Tautavel and carved out by the Verdouble river offer an amazing landscape.
The Gouleyrous gorges and its vertical cliffs is an excellent climbing spot.

Verdouble Gorges

This magnificent site is located on the outskirts of Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse village, ideal for a nice walk in a picturesque landscape.

Clear water, waterfalls, potholes and small natural lakes carved into the rock.

St Paul de Fenouillet Via Ferrata

The Via Ferrata is a mountain route equipped with fixed ladders, cables, and bridges in order to be accessible to climbers and walkers.

Market

In the high season, regional markets can be found almost every day in the small villages around us.

Tuesday mornings and Friday evenings in Caudiès-de-Fenouillèdes, Tuesday afternoons in Latour de France, Wednesdays and Saturdays in Quillan and Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, Thursdays in Maury and on Sunday mornings the famous market in Esperaza, full of local products is not to be missed.

Villages

Visit the various authentic villages with their interesting history in the Eastern Pyrenees or the Aude near the campsite.

Bugarach with its magical history ("upside down mountain" had mystical powers), Rennes-les-Bains with its public thermal baths in the river or the drinking water spring of Alet-Les-bains (where Nostradamus came from), Cucugnan (with its original views of Peyrepertuse and Queribus), Maury (with its world-famous sweet wine), Ille-sur-Têt (for the superb site: "Les Orgues d'Ille-sur-Têt" and its proximity and views of the imposing Canigou mount.

Day trips

  • Want to go to town? Less than an hour's drive away is the picturesque city of Perpignan. If you go a little further afield, you'll arrive in Spain in Figueres or Barcelona for a day trip. Toulouse or Montpellier are also less than 2 hours away, making them easy to visit.
  • A day at the sea? Near Perpignan there are many options like Argeles sur mer, Collioure, Saint Cyprien or Leucate.
